History

The Mount Snow Ski Educational Foundation was founded in 1972. That was when “home” was a 24 x 24 building plus a collection of rented houses. Students took classes at Wilmington High School and trained half days at Mount Snow.

In 1980, Mount Snow Academy was created because interest in individualized academic attention was well worth a dedicated faculty. The educational model we currently use has served us well for almost 40 years. By pairing educators with students it was clear that the faculty could closely match the sending schools curricula enabling smooth transitions back home in the spring.

In 1994, Freeski coaches came onboard, and shortly after, Snowboard coaches joined the ranks bringing added enthusiasm for the teams. In 1996 the A-House was purchased giving MSA a permanent home. House Parents lived with the athletes, prepared meals, drove to doctor appointments, helped with homework and more. The group became like an extended family for several months each year.

As Mount Snow Academy has grown and prospered, the excitement of purchasing a new home, the Matterhorn Inn, came to fruition in 2016. An iconic emblem of the Alps, this was a fitting upgrade enabling more students to attend MSA. Located in the heart of the Deerfield Valley, the new MSA campus is growing into an outstanding winter term academy. Adding the Whipple Tree Inn as another dorm in 2018, and the Zmetra Training Center in 2020, MSA continues to grow and seek out opportunities to strengthen it’s place as the premier winter sports academy in the Northeast.

“There are multiple positive attributes that ski racing can teach us, most relevant for me was CONFIDENCE. Simply put, if you want to race well you need to be confident. The time I spent at MSA not only helped my confidence as a young racer, it also helped me throughout college and as I entered the ‘real world’. At the end of day I can think of no better skill to pass along to my children.”

— Shawn Byron

“Behind every great athlete is a team of great people…MSA allows you to be dedicated, to pursue your snowboarding, skiing. People only need opportunity to be great.”

— Kelly Clark
