Academics at Vermont Academy at Mount Snow

Vermont Academy at Mount Snow is in session during quarters 2 & 3 or the 2nd trimester of the school year. Student-athletes arrive with their textbooks and laptops and are carefully matched with an educator for each subject. Each class meets 3 times a week for 40 minutes during academic blocks, and additional classes are scheduled as needed.

VA at Mount Snow Instructors work closely with the sending school’s curriculum and teachers in order to ensure a seamless re-entry in the spring. We provide a transcript and detailed final reports for each student-athlete once they have returned home.

Our online gradebook allows you to follow along with your student-athlete’s academic progress during their time at VA at Mount Snow. VA at Mount Snow Instructors update their student-athlete’s gradebooks weekly, and provide a running log of assignments, class engagement, and observations on strengths/weaknesses.

Conversational education.

Because students work one to one with their VA at Mount Snow instructors, they must be prepared to actively engage in discussions during their class times. A by-product of this interaction is an increased ability to reason logically and to verbally present one’s thoughts. This process, in turn, has a beneficial effect on a student’s self esteem and allows for immediate and positive reinforcement.

Our 1:1 system allows a student’s strengths to be enhanced, while the areas that need improvement can be supported on a daily basis in each subject area. VA at Mount Snow instructors are in close communication with their counterparts at the sending school, sharing course progress and curriculum changes as necessary.

At the academy, students are taught by qualified instructors, with 65% holding advanced degrees. Several Vermont Academy at Mount Snow instructors are also college professors. Many are life-long educators and passionate intellectuals.

“Our one-to-one teaching model allows me to individualize instruction and challenge each student at the perfect level. It’s impossible for a student to “slip through the cracks” because he or she alone responds to every question, is monitored on every assignment, and benefits from my constant focused evaluation. I treasure the close teaching relationships VA at Mount Snow has fostered for my students and me, year after year.”
